Declutter with Purpose

Turning Extra Stuff into Community Care in Spokane

By Jasmine Zahir September 20, 2025

If your home feels crowded with things you don’t use anymore, you’re not alone. Most of us swap out décor, furniture, or small comforts as time goes on — adding things that make our home feel cozier or more us. But that usually means older things end up tucked away in closets, spare rooms, or the garage.

I found myself in the same situation: over the years I gathered so many home goods, from throw pillows to wall art, and it all piled up. Everything was still in good condition, so I didn’t want to toss it — but the clutter took over my space and, honestly, my peace of mind. That’s when I realized I could package items into bundles and share them with families who would truly enjoy them.

I also think back to when I first moved into my own apartment. My mom gave me a bunch of random home goods she no longer used — things like wall art, a shower curtain, toothbrush holders, and a few other little touches. I had moved in with nothing, and it was amazing how just a handful of small items made my tiny studio apartment actually feel like a home. That experience is what really opened my eyes to how powerful it can be to pass along even the simplest things.

Bundle Ideas to Make Decluttering Simple

Instead of donating random bags of stuff, you can organize your extras into themed bundles. This makes it easier for charities (or moms you meet directly) to know what’s inside, and it turns everyday items into thoughtful gifts.

  • Home Comfort Packages – Throw pillows, blankets, rugs, wax burners, wall art, and cozy extras.
  • Office & Work Packages – Desk organizers, stationery, lamps, working electronics, and small shelves.
  • Art & Craft Kits – Paints, yarn, sewing supplies, sketchbooks, or kids’ craft kits.
  • Toiletry & Hygiene Packs – Shampoo, soap, feminine products, baby lotion, toothpaste, towels.
  • Cleaning Kits – Mops, laundry baskets, unopened cleaners, sponges, or linens.
  • Clothing Bundles – Maternity clothes, coats, children’s outfits, and gently used shoes.

When I finally sorted my clutter into categories like these, it no longer felt like “junk.” It felt like care packages waiting to brighten someone else’s day.

Make It Fun with Custom Care Packages

Not everything has to fit a standard category. Try making your own themed bundles, like:

  • “Mom’s Self-Care Pack” – candles, fuzzy socks, lotion, a book.
  • “Family Movie Night” – blanket, popcorn bowls, hot cocoa mix, a DVD.
  • “Back-to-School Ready” – backpacks, notebooks, pencils, lunchboxes.

Sharing them can be just as meaningful as creating them:

  • Post in local Facebook moms’ groups. Facebook can already be a fun place to find little hidden gems that may be considered trash or clutter to other people, but this fun idea can make finding marketplace treasures even more exciting!
  • Keep a bundle or two in your car. That way if you meet someone who might enjoy it, you can hand it over right on the spot. You never know what kind of day people are having, and these small gestures can light up someone's day.
  • Host a neighborhood swap. Make decluttering a fun event where families exchange bundles. Get to know your neighborhood while sharing what used to make your house a home and letting it bright up someone else's home.

Turning clutter into themed gifts made me feel lighter at home — and more connected to my community. And remembering how much a few simple things transformed my first apartment reminds me that these bundles can make someone else’s space feel warm and welcoming too.

Why It Works

  • You reclaim your space. Bundling items keeps your home clear while making decluttering less overwhelming.
  • Families feel cared for. A package is more than “leftovers” — it’s a thoughtful gift.
  • It builds connection. Whether you donate through a charity or hand a package directly to a mom, you’re helping create a more supportive Spokane.

✨ Pro Tip: Involve your kids! Have them decorate boxes, write uplifting notes, or even pick out items for “kids’ fun packs.” It makes decluttering feel like a family project instead of a chore while also teaching your children the joy of giving.
